PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY

Like it or not, the 80’s fashion revival has outlasted it’s initial splashy seasons. (And we know you like it.) Annoying berets and belts that belong in a Whitesnake video notwithstanding, smart designers have modernized and adapted the more extreme looks to suit the image-conscious yet down-to-earth. Meet smart designers Tracy Lutz and Regina Mandell, local fashion visionaries formerly of Retroactive and Sailor Jerry. This Friday the two proudly unveil Niko, a 20-25-piece line that includes cut-up tees with fun princess sleeves, a white-hot aqua suit and a scandalous see-through tank for when you don’t feel like saying. “I want you, you dumbbell.” Lutz and Mandell created Niko for the young urban professional – but not, like, yuppies, silly. “It’s more cutting edge,” says Lutz, “We want to be structured, like a high-end designer, but affordable and with fewer pieces so you won’t see yourself coming and going.” In the coming months you’ll be able to find Niko in swish retailers and boutiques, including the hair salon and gallery American Mortals, which will begin carrying the line in April. Friday’s launch party is all about introducing the clothes to the world for the very first time – and having fun. As Mandell says, “There is a unity in Philly; people are willing to help each other out. I think the clothing business is nice – lots of friends and a nice atmosphere.” Aw.
